Cockatiels are great little birds. And there are lots of things you need to know. Spend some time on the internet researching care, feeding and training. Hand raised birds are very special little creatures.

Did you know that Cockatiels on an average live about 25-30 years, are you ready for that kind of commitment, and birds need general maintence from a vet too, like getting his or her wings and nails clipped! They can't get too hot, or too cold, they should be on a well balanced diet! Birds are picky eaters, they waste more food than they actully eat! High Quaituy food is best!
Cockatiels need a mix of seed based and pellet based diets, they also need fresh fruits and veggies, as well as things like cooked chicken and eggs, NEVER DAIRY OR SUGAR though…..If you're getting only one, your bird will look to you to be a part of his or her flock, and they require ALOT of attention….Birds….are not really best for people who have only ever "held one once" or not actually owned a bird!
If he or she is ignored, it may start plucking, it could get cystanitis when she molts, do you know what this is? Did you do any kind of research before deciding to make this purchase?
Can you afford a vet bill for a bird that is very ill and may need rushed to the vet at 3am?

Cockatiels are great birds, be consistent with the amount of time you handle the bird. Don't give it alot of time at first then less time later or the bird will be unhappy. My cockatiel is the sweetest bird I've known, with a great love for sugar cookie crumbs.

They are not difficult. They are wonderful! I have two of them, myself. You have to be sure to give them pleanty of attention. Don't put two in the same cage together, because they will bond together and become aggressive toward you. Give them fruits and vegetables, but preferably dried ones from a pet store. Nothing from Chile, because lately there's been an issue with pruduce from Chile killing birds. Not too many sunflower seeds (and only the ones specifically for birds!) because they are fattening and will cause heart trouble. Some people sonsider it to be cruel to get their wings clipped, I say as long as you do it professionally it is a whole lot less cruel than to let your bird fly and have it get out an open window or a door or something and get killed. Make sure your bird has plenty of time outside the cage, i.e. riding around on your shoulder, etc. Oh, and as my female just decided to remind me, THEY HAVE ATTITUDES. She has spent the whole day spitting water at my computer, and just spit a seed into my coffee. They have great aim, by the way! Some like to enjoy the mist from a spray bottle to bathe in, some prefer a dish of water set in their cage to bathe in. Both of mine like to play in the shower as long as it isn't too hot. I usually have my six year old niece test the water before I put my birds into it, because what's just right for her is mostly just right for my birds. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your cockatiel! Email me if you have any questions. I'm always willing to help!

Have two cockatiels, took care of one that was sick until she died. Vet said she had STD from being overbred…Yes, birds can get those. I got her from a mass breeder who didn't care about his birds, just the profit they brought in. I also volunteer with a bird rescue program.
They make great birds. If its already tame, half the work is done. They need fresh food and water atleast every other day, and you should try to take it out for play time every day for atleast an hour (the longer the better, just make sure it can get food and water when it needs to). Sometimes they get loud but I love my little tiel. You can also teach them how to talk but it isnt as clear as larger birds.

Cockatiels are excellent birds, depending on where it's been raised.
I got my Cockatiel at Petland and I made the choice because he was the only one who wouldn't bite me. He's just a baby and is skiddish.
The best thing for you to do is put your bird on a schedule and play with him a lot.
Too much might hurt him, they're fragile creatures so one playful swat could break his neck.
Change his food and his water in the morning before you go to work or something, that way he gets used to seeing you at a certain time and knowing he can depend on you.
Get a roomy cage with a lot of toys. Cockatiels love to explore and discover. Try a playgym to put on top of the cage so he'll have something to do when you're gone.
Clip his wings. They love mirrors so he could very well fly right into one and bust his beak.
They're perfect pets for anyone and everyone. They do live a good long while so be prepared to take good care of him all you can.
Alll in all, they are sweet, gentle animals that just need love and attention.

cockatiels are very lovely pets. i had one but due to it's low resistant against illness and dust it died. i'm deeply hurt by that now. they have to be kept really clean. but they are great as they don't bite hard or make too much noise and they easily get to know you. perfect size too. males are recomanded.

Great choice,There great as pets.First give them tons of fruits and veggies you can still give them seeds but always give them more fruits and veggies.Second give them time to Rome around your house when they want to.To know when they want to come out, well my bird will go on the bottom of the cage and run back and forth or it will peck on the cage door.Third use newspaper at the bottom and the cage should have a square top not round. Forth get spray millet. They go crazy for that stuff. For more info ask your Avian Vet.

There is no way you will regret it. Give them a good diet and lots of attention. I taught myself how to clip wings and toenails and had no incidents, so it's not that hard and you dont need to get a vet to do it every time. contrary to what most people believe the average lifespan of a cockatiel is really only about 10 -20 years very few reach the 25-30 mark. But they are very loving and an absolute joy to have. Don't let people scare you these are not really very high maitenance birds.
