cockatiel birds…a bird lovers paradise

Archive for the ‘birds cockatiel’ Category

I love my three birds and feed them an excellent diet but I just feel like I am running out of things to do with them…. what do you all do with your birds? what activities do ou do with them each day… what are your routines? if you could answer one or all of these questions… or more… it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance…Nichola

Hi Nichola, First let me express that I am SOOOOO jealous that you have an Alexandrine!! They are so very beautiful and intelligent. I have a Moustached Parakeet, which I’m sure you know they are also an Asian Parakeet. Just a smaller version of the Alexandrine. May I also say, from one pet lover to another… thank you for caring so much for your birds!!!

My routine has changed since my illness. But they have adapted. I had to part with my cockatiels b/c of my health, but don’t worry…I found them the best home (the manager at the veterinarian I go to).

I have a Quaker “Ziggy” and “Diamond” the Moustached. One reason I named him Diamond, is because the Asian Parakeets are considered the jewels of the bird species…because of their enormous beauty.

Before my illness, this was my routine: Every morning I gave them breakfast, while they said “Eat your breakfast!”. I can’t remember what it was called off-hand, but it was cooked in the microwave. I always had the radio playing for them during the day while I was at work. When I arrived home and had fed my other children (pets), I would go to their room. I was greeted with “How are you? I’m fine, thank you!!”. I turned on their TV (they enjoy the stimulation of televison) and fed them. Yes, they also say “Eat your supper”. I would let Ziggy and Tuca (cockatiel) out on their cage. They preferred to be left to play on their cage, but I also handled them and Ziggy LOVES her bath! All I have to say is “Do you want a bath?” and she fluffs up her feathers. I know when Diamond wants a bath, because he will dunk his head into his water dish. When he sees the spray bottle he spreads his wings out with delight. Diamond preferred to be on the sofa with me or checking things out, he is very inquisitive, but I was always sure that he was safe. (I worked for a Vet and saw way too many injured birds because the owners gave them free roam of the house while not keeping an eye on them!) Every evening I enforced the phrases’ and songs they know, and would work on new sayings and sounds. I also handled them so cutting their nails was an easier job, and my cockatiel LOVED to snuggle on my shoulder. I never was able to teach them any tricks, just giving kisses. They will say “Wanna kiss, (make the sound of giving one), say mmmm THANK YOU!!!” It’s been 6 years since my illness started, and they still have retained their huge vocabulary. Ziggy will start squawking and Diamond will tell her to “knock it off”….hmmm, wonder where he heard that…LOL! Ziggy still makes the cockatiel sound, which makes me sad because I miss Tuca…she was so sweet! Diamond likes toys that he can hold with his feet. He also will drop them and pieces of food out of his cage then say “UH-OH!” Your Alexandrine is HIGHLY intelligent! They enjoy learning new words, sounds and companionship from their owner. Try teaching him/her sounds, short songs, and even play with his toys with him. Try using a small ball and playing fetch! I wish you MANY years of joy with your parrots!!! If you want any cool bird web sites, shoot me an email. p.s. I’d love to see a picture of your birds!

i have a lutino cockatiel but would like to get something like a grey parrot or cockatoo maybe even a macaw not sure just know im not giving up the bird i have now i would like to keep them in the same cage.
the cage is 7 feet high 5 feet wide and about 3 foot deep.
he is a very friendly bird loves on anything or anybody

bigger parrots such as the ones you named are probably the worst ones to have. Lorrikeets and other small parrots, conures etc would be fine. Also more cockatiels, budgies and even finches. If you do have your heart set on getting a larger bird, there is the option of removing to cockatiel to a smallr cage and then allowing the bigger bird to have the huge cage. Just a thought :)

i have two cockatiels laying eggs so far only 4 has red vines

There are no laws about how many birds you can have especially if they are born to you. In some states though there are certain breeds of birds that it is against the law to own in that state but no states condem cockatiels good luck!

My cockatiel bird has been alone for 5 years and i dicided to get him a female cockatiel but he wont let her come near him and he will get mad and start screaming like crazy i dont know what the problem is i need help to see what i can to do make them get along. Tell me what i did wrong and what i can do to ficks it please help me they been together know for five days and they still dont get along.

Well what you did wrong is put her right into his territory. You should take her out of there and house her in her own cage until he gets to know her through the cage and across the room. Then get a new cage you can put both of them in at one time, thus both birds being in a new cage so they share the territory. Otherwise until he accepts her being in HIS CAGE then he has the right to be upset. Its no big deal to us but to him shes in HIS house! LOL!

My dad thought it would give them some fresh air. But would it be too cold for them? My last bidgie died and we are not sure whether it was coz it was too cold for him outside. I am scared this budgie will die coz it is too cold for him. Any advice?

I personally would never let my parrot nor my budgies be outside all night. Our nights get way cold, and wind is a killer. Colds and birds do not mix.
If outside do you have a nesting box or some other shelter for them? Some parts of the world they are outside all the time, they are wild somewhere in this world. Just not in our cold climate.

Do they come on your shoulder?????? Mines go on peoples shoulders, heads, eat outta my dinner plates, very friendly, they whistle, sing tunes, and sit on rodaios and clocks, theya lso go on the fan, they hide under beds, lay eggs, walk all over the floor……….

Wow, it sounds like you birds are SUPER happy! The only thing is probably not a problem or you would have not mentioned it in your questioin. Sometimes birds who have a tendancy to be protective will bite faces because their eyes are higher than the eyes of the face of the person whose shoulder they are on (not the case with the cocaktiel). I'm pretty sure the fan you mention is the ceiling fan and I would assume it's turned off or they woudn't land on it. The other thing to watch out for might become a problem in the future:if your female lays eggs, she uses up a lot of calcium to do it and if the calcium gets depleted, she may become eggbound, which means the eggs get stuck inside her and she could die very quickly. Otherwise it sounds like your birds are really really happy. And someone else said that tomatoes are toxic to birds. That is not true. Mine LOVE the seeds and love tomato sauce from pizza. Salt really should be limited and water always available in the cage, but closely supervised outside the cage to prevent drowning. Avacados are the only thing that I see always stated as toxic. I also avoid mushrooms because that's a fungus and it just doesn't seem right.

Cockatiel Birds

Posted by admin

As a cockatiel bird owner, I know first hand that once you fall in love with a bird you became one of those people. For everyone who loves cockatiels we always are looking for the best for our birds. Finding supplies to meet the needs of your cockatiel bird makes it almost essential to be on line. You can’t just find a cockatiel owner with experience and understanding of cockatiel bird behavior and needs around every corner. As owners we want the best for our birds. The best diets, toys, and the happiest life we can offer. There is a community of bird lovers who understand the love and companionship that your cockatiel, or bird can bring. Online is the best place to access that community.

It always shocks me how surprised people are when they meet your cockatiel bird to find that he/she is so loveable. Numerous people say “I need one of these” after they get to know your sweet bird. People just don’t realize what a joy cockatiel birds can be. When your average person thinks pet “cockatiel birds” are not the first thing that comes to their minds. Most people think…dog, cat, and if they are exotic enough they think fish or turtle. But a Cockatiel or any parrot far surpasses in social skills any of these traditional pets.

Birds that have the right love and care and are given a bird friendly environment will often become part of the family. I have also noticed that people who care for birds tend to be very nurturing. They are not only nurturing to their dear Cockatiels but to all animals. It takes great skill and genuine love to nurture a bird. There are tons of resources out there for all of us cockatiel bird lovers.
