cockatiel birds

cockatiel birds…a bird lovers paradise

If you are a breeder or know of one - what is the birds life like? Do they eat good? Do they enjoy clean cages? Where do they get these breeder parrots/bird from?

hand raised ones by honorable breeders are taken care of well.
Most exotic birds sold in pet stores are wild caught. I dont remember that exact ratio, but an apalling number of birds are taken from the wild for each one that makes it to the pet store because so many are killed along the way, due to harsh methods of capture/transport, birds that get sick changing enviornments, bird that wont eat, have parasites, the list goes on. I am far from a bunny-hugger, but the exotic bird market like the exotic reptile market is pretty ugly.

Grass is OK as long as it has not been treated with any chemicals. Insecticides, fertilizers or other lawn chemicals can be fatal to birds.

I have a 1 year old male cockatiel and will be getting a 10 week old cockatiel. I have read you can not tell the sex of the cockatiel till age 6months. I was also told if the cockatiel turns out to be a female, she shouldn't be put in the cage with him till 18months. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There is nothing wrong by putting your baby cockatiel together
with the othe.

The only thing if she turns to be a female its not good for her to
have babys because is not in the age.

Normaly babys cockatiel are not good parents, and they
might not take care of the babys well.

Good luck!

I love my three birds and feed them an excellent diet but I just feel like I am running out of things to do with them…. what do you all do with your birds? what activities do ou do with them each day… what are your routines? if you could answer one or all of these questions… or more… it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance…Nichola

Hi Nichola, First let me express that I am SOOOOO jealous that you have an Alexandrine!! They are so very beautiful and intelligent. I have a Moustached Parakeet, which I’m sure you know they are also an Asian Parakeet. Just a smaller version of the Alexandrine. May I also say, from one pet lover to another… thank you for caring so much for your birds!!!

My routine has changed since my illness. But they have adapted. I had to part with my cockatiels b/c of my health, but don’t worry…I found them the best home (the manager at the veterinarian I go to).

I have a Quaker “Ziggy” and “Diamond” the Moustached. One reason I named him Diamond, is because the Asian Parakeets are considered the jewels of the bird species…because of their enormous beauty.

Before my illness, this was my routine: Every morning I gave them breakfast, while they said “Eat your breakfast!”. I can’t remember what it was called off-hand, but it was cooked in the microwave. I always had the radio playing for them during the day while I was at work. When I arrived home and had fed my other children (pets), I would go to their room. I was greeted with “How are you? I’m fine, thank you!!”. I turned on their TV (they enjoy the stimulation of televison) and fed them. Yes, they also say “Eat your supper”. I would let Ziggy and Tuca (cockatiel) out on their cage. They preferred to be left to play on their cage, but I also handled them and Ziggy LOVES her bath! All I have to say is “Do you want a bath?” and she fluffs up her feathers. I know when Diamond wants a bath, because he will dunk his head into his water dish. When he sees the spray bottle he spreads his wings out with delight. Diamond preferred to be on the sofa with me or checking things out, he is very inquisitive, but I was always sure that he was safe. (I worked for a Vet and saw way too many injured birds because the owners gave them free roam of the house while not keeping an eye on them!) Every evening I enforced the phrases’ and songs they know, and would work on new sayings and sounds. I also handled them so cutting their nails was an easier job, and my cockatiel LOVED to snuggle on my shoulder. I never was able to teach them any tricks, just giving kisses. They will say “Wanna kiss, (make the sound of giving one), say mmmm THANK YOU!!!” It’s been 6 years since my illness started, and they still have retained their huge vocabulary. Ziggy will start squawking and Diamond will tell her to “knock it off”….hmmm, wonder where he heard that…LOL! Ziggy still makes the cockatiel sound, which makes me sad because I miss Tuca…she was so sweet! Diamond likes toys that he can hold with his feet. He also will drop them and pieces of food out of his cage then say “UH-OH!” Your Alexandrine is HIGHLY intelligent! They enjoy learning new words, sounds and companionship from their owner. Try teaching him/her sounds, short songs, and even play with his toys with him. Try using a small ball and playing fetch! I wish you MANY years of joy with your parrots!!! If you want any cool bird web sites, shoot me an email. p.s. I’d love to see a picture of your birds!

When I see these creatures, it reminds me that there has got to be a Creator. Where do you non-believers think something so amazing as a Peacock or any creatures on this earth, including us wonderful but sometimes awful humans…come from ? How can you think it's "Big Bang" theory or whatever ? I'm not real religious but believe in God. I see his creativity and imagination in the little things. What about all the food he's provided…it's amazing to me. Look at bananas, watermelon, lemons, etc…etc…the scents of them all…the tastes. Amazing to me !! What do y'all think ?

Great question…I do sometimes wonder when I'm alone, and randomly too. It amazes me of how trees and this diversity came into nature–the flowers, trees, birds, etc. It is very cool, it feels great to think about these things. I just absolutely hate it when scientists try to take thing of such beauty and religion too and make it a world of science! I mean, they now created the stupid theory that the upper atmosphere of the earth is heaven and the lower core within the earth is hell. I mean come on! Leave things how they are…I do believe there is God but some people can't seem to leave nature and the earth the way it was born.

People just don't understand, half the world is dead because of what we do and things like this will continue. Anyway great question…loved to take the time to answer it.

(By the way, animals today and in the past amaze me, the things they do and how they can adapt. It's awesome, a dinosaur, giraffe, zebra, parakeet, etc.)

I'm considering getting a cockatiel (from a breeder) sometime in the next 3-4 months. I was wondering what people thought were some advantages of a cockatiel and disadvantages of having a cockatiel compared to other birds. Are they friendly and easy to tame? Also should I start off with one bird and after a few months move to a second bird if I were to get 2, or should I get two right away?
I've heard the its impossible to determine the sex of a cockatiel when its very young. Is this true?

They are the funniest pets you can have, I think. They're very smart and affective. However, they need to have daily social interaction. If you're working full-time at odd times and can't spend time with your tiel on a daily basis, it would be cruel to the bird. Also, they don't realy like young children (who are too rough with them, and tiels are too aware of the danger as to get over it). They can get 'noisy' if they're lonely or unhappy or hear other birds outside (that sound like tiels).

With proper care, they can live well into their 20's. They get very attached and consequently traumatized if you'd give them away after they got used to you.

You should read a few books about tiels before making that great commitment.

i have a lutino cockatiel but would like to get something like a grey parrot or cockatoo maybe even a macaw not sure just know im not giving up the bird i have now i would like to keep them in the same cage.
the cage is 7 feet high 5 feet wide and about 3 foot deep.
he is a very friendly bird loves on anything or anybody

bigger parrots such as the ones you named are probably the worst ones to have. Lorrikeets and other small parrots, conures etc would be fine. Also more cockatiels, budgies and even finches. If you do have your heart set on getting a larger bird, there is the option of removing to cockatiel to a smallr cage and then allowing the bigger bird to have the huge cage. Just a thought :)

make the loudest noise? and which are thsome of the quietest types (I know they are all reliativly noisy )
Im thinking the ones like Macaws, cockatoos, and conures are louder…and budgies …not sure which else are quieter in comparison? someone who has experience with different kinds please let me know.
I love the sound of Parrots , but my husband not so much, Thanks:)
knicks54 who said conures were quiet? reread:)

Parrotlets are one of the quieter birds. I recently got a parrotlet, and a big part of the appeal is that they're pretty much incapable of screeching as loud as many other birds. My last roommate had a budgie, and he'd screech so loud, the noise would go out her window and come in mine, and come through the walls.

I will say that my parrotlet can get a bit chattery, especially when he want attention, and will get a little loud every now and then, but most of the time it's just quiet chatter and chirps–never shrieking or screaming. I live in apartments, so a noisy bird would be a problem, but he's quieter than most of the birds I hear outside.

I did a ton of research on birds before choosing one, and I definitely recommend a parrotlet. They're playful, social, intelligent, small, cute as heck, quiet, and relatively easy to care for–and they can learn to speak. The one important thing to consider though is that they need LOTS of attention and interaction. They consider themselves a part of the family and demand to be treated as such.
